If you have already filed your taxes and wondering if you are going to receive the child tax credit, check your bank account to verify the deposit. The first payments went out July 15. If you are eligible, you should have received your payment automatically.
If you already filed your 2020 taxes, you should have received your first direct deposit payment automatically on July 15. Payments will be sent to your bank account on file with the IRS. If you don’t have an account on file, a check will be mailed to your address, which could take several weeks. If you need to update your bank account information, your address or information about your children, you’ll need to update your information with the IRS.
If you don’t have a bank account on file with the IRS, your payment will be sent via paper mail and may take several weeks to arrive. Direct deposit is the fastest way to get payments. First, check your tax return to see whether you gave the IRS your bank account information and, if so, that it is the correct bank account. If you need to add or update your bank account information, you can do that through the IRS update portal. If your account information is correct, you can also use the IRS update portal to double check to see if you are enrolled for payments. You’ll need an email address and photo ID if you haven’t already created an account with the IRS.
If you already filed your 2019 taxes, you will receive your Child Tax Credit payments automatically starting in July. Payments will be sent to your bank account on file with the IRS. Or, if you don’t have an account on file, you will get a paper check mailed to your address. If you need to update your bank account information, your address or information about your children, you’ll need to update your information with the IRS. We encourage everyone to file a 2020 tax return as well. It’s not too late to file! In addition to the Child Tax Credit, you may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit or special Michigan tax credits like the Home Heating Credit and the Homestead Property Tax Credit. The only way to make sure that you receive all available credits is to file a full tax return for 2020.
